What is MICR CODE
- Magnetic Ink Character Recognition is referred to as MICR. It is a technology used in the banking sector to process and confirm the legitimacy of paper-based documents, particularly checks. The MICR code is a special numerical code that is printed on the bottom of checks and makes it easier to handle transactions involving checks.
MICR CODE
MICR Code Format:
- The MICR code consists of a nine-digit numerical sequence. It is divided into three parts:
- The first three digits represent the city code, indicating the city where the bank branch is located.
- The next three digits represent the bank code, indicating the specific bank.
- The last three digits represent the branch code, indicating the individual bank branch.
Benefits of MICR Code:
- Processing Cheques Efficiently: MICR technology provides quick and precise processing of checks. Each cheque has a distinct MICR code that aids in automatic sorting, encoding, and data collection during cheque processing, minimising manual labour and improving operational effectiveness.
- Error detection: During the processing of checks, the MICR code serves as a validation tool. It aids in finding problems that could result in transactions being diverted or failing, such as incorrect account numbers or branch information.
- Standardized Clearing: MICR codes ensure standardized and automated clearing processes across various banks and branches. It helps in seamless interbank transactions by providing a consistent format for encoding and decoding cheque information.
- Swift Processing: The use of MICR codes enables faster cheque processing and clearance, reducing the turnaround time for cheque transactions. This benefits both individuals and businesses by facilitating timely availability of funds.
How MICR Code Works:
- Printing: Magnetic ink is commonly used to print the MICR code on cheques. Iron oxide particles in this ink are machine-readable.
- Reading: To read the MICR code during the processing of checks, specialised MICR readers or scanners are needed. These tools extract the data encoded in the code by identifying the distinctive magnetic pattern of the MICR ink.
- Processing and Validation: To verify correctness and authenticity, the MICR code is verified against the database. The routing of the cheque for processing and clearance uses the information from the MICR code, such as the bank code and branch code.
- Clearing and Settlement: The MICR code helps in the automated sorting and routing of cheques during the clearing process. It ensures that the cheques are directed to the respective banks and branches for settlement.
